Most traditional mask pads operate on hope: two layers of foam, one stiff and one soft, attempting to manage forces they were never engineered to handle. When a high-velocity foul tip strikes your mask, the energy has microseconds to go somewhere. Conventional pads compress until they can't, then spike the remaining force straight into your skull. The Davis D3O® Shear3 Pad Cores reimagine impact protection through materials science: three precisely graded density layers working in sequence, each operating in its optimal compression range, extending deceleration time by critical milliseconds that transform dangerous peak forces into manageable energy dissipation. It's a fundamental rethinking of how mask padding should work.

The Physics of Progressive Protection

Instead of one or two thick layers bottoming out under impact, the Shear3 system employs three distinct viscoelastic materials with densities stepping down from outside to inside: D3O® Aeromax at 220 kg/m³ against the frame, medium-high density VPU at 69.8 kg/m³ in the middle, and medium density VPU at 45 kg/m³ against your face. This density grading solves a fundamental problem with traditional two-layer pads. Most conventional designs use stiff EVA doing virtually all the impact work until it reaches maximum compression, then suddenly transferring remaining forces through soft open cell foam that contributes minimal resistance. It's like hitting a brick wall after passing through a spring. The EVA works alone until it can't, creating an abrupt force spike. The Shear3's graduated system ensures each layer contributes meaningful energy absorption within its optimal compression range. The impedance matching between layers allows smoother force transmission with no single material carrying the entire load until failure. Even adding a couple milliseconds to the deceleration timeline through progressive compression significantly reduces peak G-forces. The outermost D3O® layer exhibits non-Newtonian behavior, remaining flexible during normal movement but stiffening instantly upon impact to spread forces before they reach the progressive foam layers.

Unlike any mask padding on the market, the Shear3 pad core operates as part two of a unique two-part system. These pad cores contain the protective technology: the engineered layers that manage impact. They insert into Davis Pad Socks (sold separately), which provide the exterior fabric interface and frame attachment. When your pad sock wears out from seasons of use, you replace them, not the padding. Want different colors or a different material? Swap socks in minutes. Need moisture-wicking performance for summer or microfiber suede for early spring? Change socks, keep the same protection. The 1mm HDPE load distribution plate at the frame interface flexes under impact, transforming narrow 5-6mm pressure lines from mask bars into broader compression zones across the foam surface. The cores themselves are wrapped in premium tricot polyester for smooth insertion into pad socks, with the bottom pad at 34mm thickness and top pad at 30mm.

Installations & Assembly

The Shear3 pad cores require Davis pad socks (sold separately) to function. The cores insert into the socks, which then attach to your mask frame.

  • Insert each pad core fully into its corresponding Davis pad sock. The core is clearly marked to indicate which side faces your skin.
  • Zip the pad sock closed and secure the zipper handle.
  • Secure pads tightly to frame using the sock's velcro attachment straps.

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer – Ambient Temperature Sensitive

This product uses viscoelastic foam technologies that are temperature sensitive. Below 65°F, these materials become increasingly rigid and lose their impact-absorbing properties. In this state, the progressive compression system cannot function as designed, potentially resulting in higher impact forces being transmitted through the padding. For your safety and optimal protection performance, do not uses the Shear3 pad cores when air tempatures drops below 65°F.
