Behind every pitch lies a physics problem most umpires never consider until it's too late. Most traditional mask pads operate on hope: two layers of foam, one stiff and one soft, attempting to manage forces they were never engineered to handle. When a high-velocity foul tip strikes your mask, the energy has microseconds to go somewhere. Conventional pads compress until they can't, then spike the remaining force straight into your skull. The Davis Tango2 Pad Cores prove that essential protection doesn't require exotic materials: a precisely engineered dual-layer system where medium-firm EVA meets medium-density VPU, each material selected for its compression characteristics, working through the same progressive deceleration principles as our premium cores. Every millimeter of the 35mm thickness contributes to energy dissipation—no wasted cushioning foam, no hollow promises. Combined with the same 1mm HDPE load distribution plate found in our top-tier padding, the Tango2 delivers genuine impact management at a practical price point.
The Physics of Purposeful Simplicity
Where conventional dual-layer pads fail through poor material selection and abrupt impedance mismatches, the Tango2 succeeds through deliberate engineering. The medium-firm EVA at the frame interface provides structural stability and initial force spreading, maintaining its compression characteristics across temperature ranges. The medium-density VPU at 45 kg/m³ continues the deceleration timeline, offering controlled compression that conventional open-cell foams can't achieve. This isn't the arbitrary pairing found in basic pads where stiff EVA does all the work until it bottoms out, then dumps remaining forces through ineffective soft foam. The Tango2's materials are impedance-matched—the transition from EVA to VPU allows smooth force transmission without the jarring spike that occurs when materials with vastly different densities meet. The 1mm HDPE load distribution plate transforms narrow mask bar impacts into broader compression zones—engineering typically reserved for premium padding systems, now delivered at an accessible price. While simpler than our three and four-layer systems, the Tango2 proves that thoughtful material selection and proper engineering principles matter more than layer count.
Modular Innovation: The Two-Part System
Unlike any mask padding on the market, the Tango2 pad core operates as part two of a unique two-part system. These pad cores contain the protective technology: the engineered layers that manage impact. They insert into Davis Pad Socks (sold separately), which provide the exterior fabric interface and frame attachment. When your pad sock wears out from seasons of use, you replace them, not the padding. Want different colors or a different material? Swap socks in minutes. Need moisture-wicking performance for summer or microfiber suede for early spring? Change socks, keep the same protection. The 1mm HDPE load distribution plate at the frame interface flexes under impact, transforming narrow 5-6mm pressure lines from mask bars into broader compression zones across the foam surface. The cores themselves are wrapped in premium tricot polyester for smooth insertion into pad socks, with the bottom pad at 35mm thickness and top pad at 30mm.
For Umpires Who Demand Value Without Compromise
Designed specifically for the Davis Mirage 12 XCG Umpire Mask Frame but compatible with the Davis Trace and various traditional wire-weld frames, the Tango2 represents intelligent protection at an accessible price. At 4.3 ounces total weight, it's our lightest pad core option. Ideal for umpires entering competitive levels, working youth leagues where impacts are less severe, or officials who prioritize value while still demanding engineered protection over generic padding. The Tango2 proves that every umpire deserves padding designed with physics in mind, not just foam stacked with hope.

Installations & Assembly
The Tango2 pad cores require Davis pad socks (sold separately) to function. The cores insert into the socks, which then attach to your mask frame.
- Insert each pad core fully into its corresponding Davis pad sock. The core is clearly marked to indicate which side faces your skin.
- Zip the pad sock closed and secure the zipper handle.
- Secure pads tightly to frame using the sock's velcro attachment straps.
⚠️ Safety Disclaimer – Ambient Temperature Sensitive
This product uses viscoelastic foam technologies that are temperature sensitive. Below 65°F, these materials become increasingly rigid and lose their impact-absorbing properties. In this state, the progressive compression system cannot function as designed, potentially resulting in higher impact forces being transmitted through the padding. For your safety and optimal protection performance, do not uses the Tango2 pad cores when air tempatures drops below 65°F. For temperatures below 65°F consider the Davis D3O® Cloud4 Umpire Mask Pad Cores.
